James Thurman is a former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, aerospace engineer, and combat-proven Naval Aviator with over 1,500 flight hours and 200+ TLAM strike missions. His leadership and operational experience drive the vision behind Portal Aircraft Company—pioneering a new class of vertical flight for defense and commercial applications.


He holds advanced degrees in Aerospace and Space Systems Engineering and has taught these subjects at the U.S. Naval Academy and U.T. Arlington—bringing both academic rigor and real-world experience to PAC

His work includes leading complex systems efforts across defense and space programs, including national satellite systems and missile defense—where performance, reliability, and mission success are critical.
